Westside Park

Westside Park

Westside Park

Located in the floodplain along the southern boundary of the Westside Neighborhood, Westside Park serves over half of Muncie’s community. Westside Park has a little league sized baseball diamond (also used for softball leagues), basketball courts, vast amounts of openspace for spontaneous play, multiple picnic shelters and picnic tables, a playground, a shuffleboard court, restroom facilities and a drinking fountain, and three wirecontrol airplane circles. Two of the basketball courts were created by converting tennis courts. Large mature trees are throughout the property. The White River forms the southern boundary of the park, providing the opportunity for bank fishing, and viewing wildlife. Westside Park has seen multiple improvements in the last 5 years. The basketball courts were resurfaced and a new parking lot was installed on the west side of the courts. Several trees were planted in open space north of the playground. The White River Greenway was extended past Westside Park, linking this park to several neighborhoods, with new parking areas and a turn-around constructed as a part of the greenway improvements. Greenway was also installed in the west half of the park along White River Blvd.

White River Greenway

White River Greenway

White River Greenway

The White River Greenway, Muncie, is a paved surface over three miles in length, and can be used by all non-motorized travel modes. Construction on the east and west sides of this trail has been ongoing, in order to connect it up with parks at either end. This work is now mostly completed.
The trail itself is hilly in parts, and it crosses several roads along its course. However, its track along the White River offers many beautiful views, and patient trail-goers can find herons and other waterfowl along the way.
As mentioned, the Greenway traverses or edges several parks in Muncie , including Westside Park , Tuhey Park near the midpoint, and the south end of McCulloch Park . In these sections you can find indoor/outdoor shelters, water, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic facilities, basketball courts, bike racks, and an aquatic center. Park benches offer relief for the weary, and at some points, one can find stairs to overlooks of the river. Be advised there is no automobile parking in Westside Park . Besides these open areas, the trail crosses the campus of Minnetrista Center , which is an educational, arts, historical facility with a children’s garden, nature preserve, and a focus on East Central Indiana life. It was once a site of one of the Ball family estates, of Ball canning jar fame and other manufacturing endeavors.
